Gardening Tips
Save that Water -- Save the water you have boiled potatoes or eggs in. It's nutrient-rich and when cool, is ideal for watering houseplants. OR After steaming vegetables, use the leftover water for houseplants. It is full of vitamins that make plants flourish

No Gravel for Drainage? -- Instead of using Gravel, line the bottom of a flowerpot by cutting a sponge to size. It will absorb water better and keep dirt from sifting out. This is also a good way to recycle old sponges.
OR Try using nutshells after cracking nuts. They work nicely in the bottom of flowerpots for drainage.
OR Put the "Plastic Chip" used in shipping packing in the bottom of the flowerpots. They are light-weight but still allow for drainage.

Ants, ants, ants everywhere ... Well, they are said to never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march. See for yourself

Animal Repellent -- To keep cats and dogs from shrubbery and porches, sprinkle mothball flakes on the area that needs protection. Flakes will settle into the grass and last for several days so that you only need apply twice a week or so. The animals may eventually avoid that place even if you don't put out flakes anymore.
CAUTION: Sprinkle FLAKES, not moth balls; children can mistake the balls for sweets and they are poisonous; also mothballs don't settle into the grass like the flakes.

Mowing HIGH Grass -- Before cutting tall, damp grass, spray the cutting blade of the lawn mower with vegetable-oil spray and wet grass won't stick

BARBECUING TIPS AND HINTS

BBQ Grill Rack Cleaning -- Put it in a clean bin bag and spray it generously with oven cleaner. Tightly close the bag and leave it overnight. The next day, washing the rack is a breeze

A Quick Grill Cleanup -- Scrunch a new piece of aluminum foil into a ball and rub the steel grate with it. It should release any leftover residue

Seasonal Tips
Ice Cream -  Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips

If you get a sunburn do one of the following:
-To cool down affected areas, rub with apple cider vinegar - Pat with a wet teabag - or  apply a paste of baking soda and water

Laundry Travel Tip -- When going on a trip, pack a few plastic bags in your suitcase. While you are traveling, use the bags to hold your soiled laundry, keeping it separate from your clean clothing. When you return home, just put the bags in the laundry room.

For INSECT Stings & Bites -- For a Sting, cover the area with a fresh-cut onion and let sit for a while. For a mosquito bite, try dabbing on a bit of toothpaste or a little paste made by moistening a little baking soda. Best Hint! Soothe the itch with an ice cube.

Painless Band-Aid  (Plaster) Removal -- Soak a cotton ball with baby oil and apply it to the sides of the plaster. In about 10 minutes, the adhesive will be softened so much that the plaster will come off automatically and painlessly!

TENNIS BALLS LOST BOUNCE -- Have your tennis balls lost their bounce?  If so, place the can of balls with the lid off overnight in a closed oven. Set the thermostat to the lowest setting and the heat will get them back into shape

Lower you water costs in your household

Tips:
* Store drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap run every time you want a cool glass of water

* Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded or properly set the water level for the size of load you are using

* When washing dishes, use smaller washing up bowls  for washing and for rinsing (instead of rinsing under flowing water)

* While taking a shower, turn the shower off while you wash with soap or shampoo

* Don't let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush your teeth first while waiting for water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin

* Be mindful when washing your hands or about any time you have water running.  It only takes a small trickle to wash and rinse and can help save water

* Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or garden, or cleaning

* Repair dripping taps by replacing washers. If your tap is dripping at the rate of one drop per second, you can expect to waste 2,700 gallons per year which will add to the cost of water and sewer utilities.

* Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other such waste in the trash rather than the toilet

* Conserve water because it is the right thing to do. Don't waste water just because someone else is footing the bill such as when you are staying at a hotel.

* Don't over water your lawn. As a general rule, lawns only need watering every 5 to 7 days in the summer and every 10 to 14 days in the winter. A hearty rain eliminates the need for watering for as long as two weeks.

*Water lawns during the early morning hours when temperatures and wind speed are the lowest. This reduces losses from evaporation

* Raise the lawn mower blade to at least three inches. A lawn cut higher encourages grass roots to grow deeper, shades the root system and holds soil moisture better than a closely-clipped lawn.

Finally

Try to do one thing each day that will result in a savings of water. Don't worry if the savings is minimal. Every drop counts. And every person can make a difference.
